Dresden Timeline Adjuster

Based on the timeline found here, I've tried to place a year to the novels and short stories (I'll attempt to expand this, eventually). Just insert the year you believe Storm Front takes place in, Harry's age during that story, and hit the button - this page will handle the rest.

Short story/graphic novel titles that have a pound sign (#) before their names do not necessarily have a proper placement relative to one another, this is a best-effort to get them in proper chronological order, and even Jim is a apparently known to get a little confused there. ;)

"Harry's Age" is exactly what it sounds like - although I should clarify that if the story includes his birthday (example: Dead Beat), I include the additional year in his age.

Finally, any event that has an asterisk (*) is calculated based on Harry's birth year, rather than directly from Storm Front's timing, and Harry's Age is underlined for emphasis in those entries as well.

New placement assumptions

Cold Case takes place "shortly after Cold Days."

Day One takes place during "Butters' first day as a Knight of the Cross" (i.e. shortly after Skin Game's conclusion).

Other placement data

There are several key pieces of information that have led me to set the "default" for Storm Front as taking place in the year 2000, with Harry being 25 years old during the story:

  • We know that 'Death Masks' takes place during an election year for Chicago's mayor. That means it should take place in 2003 - or, if earlier, 1999, 1995, etc... if later, 2007, 2011, etc.
  • 'Storm Front' takes place a little less than 3 years prior to Death Masks, putting us at 2000 (or 1996/92/88 or 2004/08/12, assuming we push the entire stack earlier or later.
  • We know that Harry has to be at least 23 or 24 by the time that Storm Front rolls around. Trying to compress the aspects of his life between him killing Justin (at the age of 16) and starting his own detective agency any further than that strains credulity.
  • Furthermore, Jim Butcher has stated that as of Storm Front, Jim is a) 25 year old and b) has been on his own as a 'Professional Wizard' for 2 years

    • Using these data points, I've tried to pin, as closely as possible, a logical order for all of the events that have their own publication, as well as the "key events" in Harry's own life. This obviously isn't a complete list of life events, but the most important ones, I've tried to capture.

    *Ghoul Goblin contradicts itself. The text at the start of each issue indicates that its been a "few months" since the events of Fool Moon, whereas Harry's internal monologue indicates it's been "just weeks".
